Evonik Degussa Canada’s Gibbons Site Achieves 10 Years Of Operations
Facility’s Outstanding Performance, Employee Dedication, Safety Record Cited
GIBBONS, Canada, July 1, 2008 -- Evonik Degussa Canada, Inc. is commemorating its 10 year anniversary at its Gibbons, Alberta hydrogen peroxide facility.
"Our Gibbons plant’s outstanding performance and record for safety is a testament to the dedication of the more than 45 men and women who are employed at the plant," said Carlos Gil Mast, Active Oxygens vice president and general manager – Americas. "Each employee is committed to satisfying the needs of our customers, plant safety, personnel safety, operational excellence and continuous improvement. We are extremely grateful for their contributions over the past 10 years.”
Richard Boettcher, Evonik site manager, noted that over the past decade -- as part of Evonik Degussa Canada -- the plant is consistently ranked among the top facilities in the country in terms of safety and production.
“We are well-positioned to continue to produce product for our numerous customers for many years to come," he added.
Boettcher noted the site, which is about 45 minutes from Edmonton, has received numerous safety awards and has gone five years without a lost time accident. Recently, CN, one of the world’s largest railroads, awarded its 2007 Safe Handling Awards to Evonik Degussa Canada, in recognition of shipments from the Gibbons facility. “It was the ninth year in a row that CN has bestowed this award to the site,” he added.
Boettcher also noted that Gibbons employees are also intimately involved in the local community. Last year, the company donated $500 to support the Redwater Library’s outreach programs.
A year earlier, employees at the site donated more than $40,000 for the local United Way chapter, setting a participation record and winning praise from the local agency officials.
At the time, Erin Lees, Account Manager at the United Way of the Alberta Capital Region based in Edmonton, Canada, said Evonik’s participation was “phenomenal” and an inspiration to others.
"We are extremely gratified to be able to help the community in our own small way,” said Boettcher. “I am extremely proud of our employees, whose passion for the community is commendable.”
In 2002, Evonik completed a major debottnecking project at the site.
Hydrogen peroxide is a clear, colorless liquid used in the pulp and paper, mining, environmental, textile, personal care, electronics and other industries.
