Evonik’s CYRO Facility Receives Prestigious RC 14001 Certification

Commitment To Environmental, Health, Safety & Security Excellence Cited

SANFORD, Maine, January 28, 2008 - Evonik Industries’ CYRO facility in Sanford, Maine, has received the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) prestigious RC14001 certification, which recognizes the company’s continuing efforts to improve its Environmental, Health, Safety & Security performance.

Quality Systems Registrars, a leading independent global auditing firm based in Sterling, Virginia, recommended the certification following an exhaustive review of the Sanford plant’s operations.

Receiving the Responsible Care® RC 14001 certification is a tremendous achievement that recognizes the company’s commitment and the quality of its Environmental, Health, Safety & Security systems, said John Rolando, president of CYRO Industries and president of Evonik Degussa Corporation, the North American operations of Germany-based Evonik Industries.

“At Sanford - as at all our plants - we constantly strive to improve our Environmental, Health, Safety & Security performance by going beyond what is merely required,” Rolando said. “Responsible Care practices are ingrained in our daily operations. And we seek to continually improve.”

Responsible Care 14001 is a pioneering Environmental, Health, Safety & Security (EHSS) standard that integrates the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care elements with the environmental management system established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14001), Rolando said.

Drew Scott, Sanford plant manager, noted CYRO places a strong emphasis on the safety of its processes and minimization of their effects on the surrounding environment.

“RC 14001 certification is a major accomplishment for each and every employee at the Sanford plant,” said Scott. “Day in and day out, our employees have proven that we have a state-of-the-art facility.”

CYRO’s Sanford site manufactures acrylic sheet and molding compounds and is one of the area’s major employers. The average employee tenure at the plant is more than 16 years, said Scott. “Our employees take pride in their work, and receiving RC 14001 certification is a testament to their diligence and hard work,” he continued. “But we won’t rest. We will continually improve our processes.”

Other Evonik sites in North America that have already achieved RC 14001 certification include: Parsippany, N.J.; Hopewell, Va.; Mapleton, Ill., Osceola, Ark.; and Janesville, Wis.; as well as facilities in Greensboro, N.C.; Garyville, La.; Horsham, Pa.; Deer Park, Texas, Sarasota, Fla.; and Mobile, Ala.
