Evonik Supports Science Education At Sanford High School
Grant From Global Innovation Leader Marks Company's New Corporate Identity
SANFORD, Maine, December 4, 2007 – Evonik Industries, whose operations were formally known as Degussa’s CYRO Industries, today presented the science department at Sanford High School with a $500 community grant to support the school's science education programs.
The $500 grant is Evonik’s way of celebrating with its neighbors in Sanford but is also a continuation of the company-wide commitment to science education, said Drew Scott, Evonik’s CYRO Industries’ site manager. “Learning about the wonders of science can serve as a great inspiration for students, who may go on to be the chemists, researchers, or engineers of tomorrow,” he added.
George Pouravelis, head of the science department at Sanford High School said CYRO’s donation “is a wonderful investment in the future of the community.”
“Science is crucial in all aspects of life whether it is generating ideas to improve the quality of life for all people or generating important ethical and personal discussions regarding technological developments, science helps kids think about their place in the world,” he added.
CYRO’s gift will be used to purchase data collecting devices to interface with computers and calculators, Pouravelis said, “which will help our students collect massive amounts of data in a very short time and provide material for scientific thought. This may help them get a sense of research based decision making and in turn lean toward a future science career.”
Evonik employees have a deep commitment to science education, Scott said. “By supporting our educational institutions, we are investing in the development of new scientific discoveries, future research and development researchers, and global economic advancement,” he continued.
